Follow The Signs
We were heading to another L.A. happy hour spot when we discovered it was discontinued…boohoo. Then we saw it, a beacon of light from the happy hour gods that pointed us into Gonpachi’s valet parking. Walking in we were transported into the world of a traditional Japanese Village. Little did we know we actually were in a Japanese Village! Alan, the General Manager, gave us a tour and explained that every piece of this restaurant was shipped over from the homeland. Even down to the gigantic wooden columns that held the place up.
This happy hour menu is filled with a variety of eats that will please all palates. Starting with ANY of the rice burgers. We haven’t found this item anywhere else in the city. They taste fantastic and they were perfectly complimented by the selection of Japanese beer (served in frosted glasses which we all appreciated) and hot or cold sake. Each Rice Burger came with Baked Sweet Potato Fries making this combo enough for a Happy Hour Meal Deal. While service was the only bump in the road, even the basics like Calamari and Popcorn Shrimp, served in an edible bowl that Dr. Drinks devoured, (see photo) scored well above average. Our Veggie Vixen was obsessed with the Shishito Peppers while the rest of the table couldn’t get enough of another vegetarian delight, the Agedashi Tofu. Oh and the sushi! Don’t get us started…Mmmm…lots to choose from and all good. Lets hope the service improves.
The Happy Hour Queens were drowning in the Cold Sake served in Masu square cedar boxes giving them two drinks in one. How appropriate. Everyone at the table gave 5 Martini Glasses to the beautifully presented Sakegria. Don’t leave without trying this and eat the fruit when the Sakegria is gone…trust me you’ll thank us.
And just when you think its over…a complimentary treat may come to your table. That night we were surprised with Oyster Shooters. They were delish.
- Happy Hour Queens: Along with being the Happy Hour Queens, we are also known as The Sauce Queens. The Wagyu Beef Burger didn't even need ketchup. It was that good.
- Veggie Vixen: If you're a Pescetarian, a vegetarian who eats fish, this place is paradise. Vegetarians have plenty to choose from as well.
- Dr. Drinks: Wasn't a fan of all the...in this review but...this place...is freakin' fantastic...!
