Barbarella Neighborhood Bar & Kitchen
Seasonal, Hand Crafted, Fresh, Creative - For Real!?!
Barbarella Neighborhood Bar & Kitchen loudly claims "The Best Happy Hour" using words like "hand crafted" and "creative" in their massive sign viewable to all Silver Laker's who happen by. This happy hour crew isn't used to a restaurant taking such pride in their happy hour. Usually happy hour is a bit of an after thought where last nights leftovers are put on a makeshift menu at discounted prices. Barbarella has made the claim and now we will see if they can live up to it! Roll up your sleeves happy hour loyalists and lets dig in.
For starters, ALL their cocktail ingredients are 100% hand crafted in house. Their $6 Elderflower Gimlet Martini was 10 ounces of pure joy. With an extensive list of beer and wine selections, including local brewers that we have never heard of, the non-cocktail drinkers also have much to cheer about. Our pick is the $4 draft Eagle Rock Limbo which left Dr. Drinks in limbo about heading to the next happy hour or just staying here for another pint! They offer a beer taster, which is much recommended since there are so many fantastic selections to try.
Claiming "fresh" and "creative" food on happy hour, our crew dove into the TBC Humus, Tuna Tar Tar, and the Fish Tacos. The Tuna Tar Tar was probably the best Tuna Tar Tar we've had blending shallots, jalapenos, avocado and spicy tuna to perfection. The Fish Tacos were VERY filling, the batter was good, but be sure to squeeze the lemon on top for that extra flavor burst. Without the aid of the lemon, the Fish Tacos are just average.
So we dug in and got down and dirty with the folks at Barbarella to test their declaration of being "The Best Happy Hour." For the most part, they lived up to their claim. Overall, the thought that went into the interesting selections on the menu, the 24 different micro brews, and the solid cocktail mixing gives Barbarella high marks. BUT, "The Best" is quite a claim. We will concede, though, that Barbarella is the best happy hour we've had in Silver Lake!
- Veggie Vixen: TBC Hummus has sauteed mushrooms in a sweet teriyaki sauce. Who knew hummus went so well with sauteed mushrooms? Thank you Barbarella!
- Happy Hour Queens: Elderflower Gimlet Martini was 10 ounces of pure happiness. Two please!
- Dr. Drinks: The is a fantastic stop for local hand crafted beer selections on happy hour. The North Coast Old Rasputin is so creamy it's like lotion in your throat, in a good way, and you will be cheating yourself if you don't try the local favorite Eagle Rock Limbo.
